Straight-line
(Cost − residual value) ÷ useful life. The same charge every year; the most common method under IFRS for SMEs.
Double declining balance
2 ÷ life × opening book value. Higher charges early on, for assets that lose value fast.
Sum-of-the-years'-digits
A faster pattern than straight-line, slower than declining balance.
Book value
Cost − accumulated depreciation. It never goes below the residual value.

FAQ
Which depreciation method should I use?
The one that best reflects how the asset's benefits are used up. Straight-line suits most buildings, furniture and software; declining balance suits vehicles and IT equipment. Tax rules may require their own rates.
Is accounting depreciation the same as tax depreciation?
Not always. Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UK set their own tax depreciation rates or allowances, so many companies keep both.
