Egypt's e-receipt system is the consumer-side partner of the e-invoice. Every sale to an end consumer (B2C) from a shop, restaurant or service business is sent electronically to the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA), and the customer receives a receipt with a unique ID and QR code.
How the rollout works
- The ETA adds taxpayers in phases by ministerial decision, publishing the names on its website.
- Recent decisions (123, 225 and 281 of 2025) set deadlines in July and September 2025 for new groups, including taxpayers at the Sixth District and Fifth Settlement tax offices, from 15 September 2025.
- More groups are added over time, so check the ETA lists and e-receipt inquiry service regularly.
What you need
- A compliant system: a POS or ERP that can generate e-receipts in the ETA format, such as Odoo POS with the Egyptian localisation.
- Registration: register your branches and each POS device on the ETA e-receipt portal.
- Item codes: map your products to GS1 or EGS codes, the same codes used for e-invoices.
- Integration and testing: connect the POS, test sales, returns and cancellations in the pre-production environment, then go live.
- Daily monitoring: check for rejected or unsent receipts, especially after connectivity drops.
Common problems
- Products without codes, which leads to rejected receipts.
- Offline POS sales not synchronised before the deadline.
- Returns issued as negative sales instead of proper return receipts.
